October 2018 USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr DD850 Field Day Report

All Hands,

The October field day saw us crew the ship with Massachusetts Maritime Academy students, Navy veterans, and our large contingent of civilian enthusiasts.  We had 11 destroyer veterans aboard joined by our large youth movement.
 
The team accomplished a lot of projects and upkeep on our veteran destroyer with both fresh paint and continued preservation efforts of never restored areas internally; including preservation of spaces and equipment on the third platform.  We cannot thank the following people enough for their dedication and support:

Work Accomplished:
Restoration (including painting):
Starboard side Main Deck

1.       Removed and reworked FWD fan room door.  Primed and painted same.
2.       Prepped, primed, and painted bulkhead from ASROC deck ladder to FWD expansion joint.
Port side Main deck
1.       Prep, prime, and painted overhead under Torpedo deck.
2.       Prep, prime, painted deck stanchions to Torpedo deck
3.       Primed and painted bulkhead forward of breakwater
4.       Prep, primed, and painted after main deck outside ship store
ASROC Deck
1.       Prep, prime, paint ASROC rail locker door
2.       Display highline chair on top of ASROC Control Station
3.       Prep, prime, paint ASROC deck blast shield
4.       Welded metal plate over hole on deck near FWD expansion joint.
5.       Prep, prime, paint after bulkheads (port and stbd) of FWD deckhouse on ASROC deck
6.       Prep, prime, paint ASROC power supply locker
7.       Prep, prime, paint stanchion on ASROC deck
8.       Put ASROC test sets in ASROC Control station for display
Fantail
1.       Prep, prime, and touchup areas on fantail
2.       Paint gunnels as needed
3.       Removed all items from MT52 in preparation for restoration
4.       Reworked and fabricated supports to remount ship’s flagstaff.  Welded same in and fixed damaged angle supports.
Foc’sle
1.       Prep, primed, painted gunnels and select deck areas aft of MT51
2.       Prep, primed, painted gunnels and deck area forward of MT 51
DASH Hangar
1.       Painted DASH deck where primed previously.
2.       Prep, primed, and painted forward DASH hangar visitor vestibule.
3.       Painted top of the DASH Hangar work bench
4.      Removed unnecessary items and placed historic items for display.
Anchor Windlass
1.       Continuation of Top Coating Anchor Windlass Equipment Room.
B3 After Fireroom
1.      Stripped stainless area of Boiler 3 and 4 of paint that was incorrectly placed there by volunteers years ago
2.      Relamped all of B3, especially over the stbd shaft
3.      Painted stbd shaft cover red.
4.      Cleanup and painted pump valves Aluminum
5.      Painted lower level soot blowers Aluminum
6.      Removed spare parts and item to off ship stowage
 
General Restoration and Maintenance tasks:
1.      Installation of USS Steinaker DD863 handling room wheels in MT52 upper handling room.
2.      General cleanup initiation of Burke Destroyermens museum
3.      Install pressure gauge in MT 52 upper handling room
4.      Place inflatable life jackets in MT52 handling room to replicate cruise book photos.
5.      Painted all bulkheads in SONAR Motor Generator Room white.
6.      Major prep, rust converter, and prime effort of machinery, machinery foundations, deck, and lower bulkheads of Refer deck Machinery Space.
7.      Complete prep and prime of SONAR Motor Generator room under Mess Decks.
8.      Manned the paint locker and organized supplies for the field day
9.      Cooked meals for a hungry crew
10.  Stowed searchlights for winter
11.  Provide tours to visitors.
12.  Placement of USS Newman K. Perry DD883 Dummy load cables in Radar Transmitter room for display.
13.  Rope work on w/t door handles by the radio room, the sign in the transmitter room, in engine room, wrapping mooring lines, and giving out monkey fist key chains to volunteers.
